Bluegrass
Kind of Country · Includes Newgrass
Mid-1940s acoustic intensification of old-time country: mandolin chop, three-finger banjo, high lonesome trio, and breakdown speed, usually without drums (Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys with Flatt and Scruggs, 1946–48). It is a style of country, not a synonym for all Appalachian string music and not an alias of Old-time. Monroe names the practice; the 1950s–60s Folk revival carries it onto campuses and television. Blues is the Monroe mandolin-and-song donor; jam-band leftover stays unfiled.
