Dancehall
Also called Jamaican dancehall, ragga
Includes Reggae en español
Jamaican popular music after roots reggae’s international decade: DJ/toaster as the lead voice, a faster or sparer riddim, and — from 1985 (Under Me Sleng Teng) — a digital chassis as a default (Yellowman, Sister Nancy, Tenor Saw, later ragga). It hears Reggae for sound-system culture, riddim reuse, and off-beat residue, Dub for versioning as the normal industrial form, and 1990s Hip-hop for rap flow. It is not a style of Reggae and not an alias of hip-hop. Toasting and the selector are older than this name; the node is the late-1970s–onward school that makes them the market center. Ragga is the digital wing, not a second system. Dembow into Reggaeton, toast into Grime, and 2000s chart toast into Pop are named landings. Bashment, reggae fusion, and Afrobeats meetings remain leftover bins until those nodes are curated.
