Flamenco
Also called cante jondo, arte jondo, arte flamenco
Includes Concert flamenco
A named Andalusian art of song, guitar, and dance that crystallizes in mid-nineteenth-century urban entertainment (the café cantante) and is organized internally as a set of palos: song types with a habitual meter (compás), mode or key, verse type, tempo, and affect. Cante is historically primary; toque and baile articulate the same palo from guitar and body. Gitano families are central to transmission and prestige, but flamenco is not the private property of one ethnicity. It is an Andalusian complex in which Gitano and payo (non-Gitano) professionals, café publics, and later the state and the tourist stage all take part (Manuel). The word flamenco as a style name, and the professional circuit that made it exportable, belong to the 1800s. Older Andalusian song, work verse, and domestic Gitano practice are antecedents, not yet this node.
