Also called korean pop

Kind of Pop

1990s–onward South Korean idol-industry chart pop: verse–chorus hooks, choreographed groups, and a trainee-agency public (Seo Taiji as the hinge, then H.O.T., later SM/YG/JYP groups). It is a named child of Pop, not a leftover “Korean pop” bin. It hears Hip-hop as the 1992 rap-break hinge, J-pop as the idol-agency factory, Dance-pop as the title-track dance single, and Trot as the domestic hit market being recoded (and partly refused). Korean hip-hop stays unfiled as a leftover scene name; the hop is hip hop k pop.

Passed on

Pop genre · 1958–

2010s umbrella pop takes K-pop’s group title-track, dance drop, and multimedia idol rollout onto global radio.

Influence

Dance-pop → K-pop

meter and grooveform and structureperformance practicestrength: highscholarly consensus1996–2009recordingradiodance

Mechanism

K-pop keeps dance-pop’s chorus-first dance single and video-choreography job. Strength high. Eurodance stays a leftover nickname, not a parent.

Evidence

First- and second-generation title tracks (H.O.T. through Girls’ Generation) against 1990s dance-pop form (Grove, Starr).

Debate

Whether K-pop is already dance-pop. The trainee-group public is K-pop’s; the dance-chart song is dance-pop’s.

Hip-hop → K-pop

performance practicemeter and grooveform and structurestrength: highscholarly consensus1992–1996recordingradio

Mechanism

K-pop’s 1992 hinge keeps hip-hop’s rap verse, breakbeat, and trio staging, then folds it into a Korean title track. Strength high. A separate “Korean hip-hop” leftover stays unfiled; this hop is the chart recoding.

Evidence

Nan Arayo (1992) against US hip-hop group practice (Grove).

Debate

Whether Seo Taiji is hip-hop, not K-pop. The rap kit is hip-hop’s; the domestic youth-chart job becomes K-pop’s.

J-pop → K-pop

performance practiceform and structurefunction and contextstrength: highscholarly consensus1996–2001recordingpedagogypatronage

Mechanism

K-pop takes J-pop’s trainee agency, group single, and TV idol public as the Seoul factory model (SM and kin). Strength high. This is the industry-and-form hop, not a language copy.

Evidence

H.O.T. and first-generation SM groups against 1990s Japanese idol practice (Grove).

Debate

Whether Seo Taiji already made K-pop without Japan. Seo Taiji is the hip-hop hinge; the idol-group factory is J-pop’s.

Mediators

artist: H.O.T.

Pop → K-pop

form and structuremelodyperformance practicestrength: highscholarly consensus1992–1997recordingradio

Mechanism

K-pop hears Pop’s title-track hook and dance-chart staging as a Seoul trainee-industry school. Strength high. Trot is a local parent to be filed on the K-pop node, not here.

Evidence

Seo Taiji 1992 and 1990s first-generation group singles (Grove, Starr).

Debate

Whether K-pop is hip-hop or dance. Those hops wait on the K-pop node; this edge is the pop-song job.

Mediators

artist: Seo Taiji and Boys

Trot → K-pop

melodyperformance practicefunction and contextstrength: mediumscholarly consensus1992–1996recordingradio

Mechanism

K-pop inherits trot’s Korean-language hit-song public, then drops the two-beat lilt for hip-hop and dance-pop. Strength medium. The 1992 hinge is a break as much as a gift.

Evidence

Seo Taiji positioned against adult trot radio as the youth alternative (Grove).

Debate

Whether trot is a parent or only a rejected predecessor. The domestic hit market is trot’s; the musical kit is mostly not.

Mechanism

2010s umbrella Pop takes K-pop’s group title-track, dance drop, and multimedia idol rollout onto global radio. Strength medium. This is the reverse of pop k pop.

Evidence

Psy 2012 and BTS late-2010s chart law (Grove, Starr).

Debate

Whether this is still K-pop, not pop. The Seoul factory remains K-pop’s; the chart-law recoding is the umbrella’s.
