Ceremonial song of the Kaluli of Bosavi, Papua New Guinea: weeping, bird-becoming, and “lift-up-over sounding” as a named texture (Feld). This is a New Guinea highland-fringe seed, not a leftover “Melanesia” bin. Empty extra Received/Given is historically checked: gisalo nights stay on this node. Huli yodeling and Sepik sacred flute leftover as siblings, not parents or children. Mission and popular song leftover as later incoming, not drawn. Voices of the Rainforest (Rykodisc, 1991) takes Kaluli song in the forest — gisalo weeping-song, work song, and the named texture “lift-up-over sounding” against birds and water — and mixes it as a commercial ambient soundscape. Strength medium. This is not verse–chorus worldbeat; it is Hart/Feld documentary sound art sold as atmosphere. Gisalo nights leftover as the village job, not a child.

Debate

Whether an ethnographic soundscape is ambient as a style. Eno’s ambient is studio atmosphere; Hart’s The World series is the commodity frame that made Bosavi listenable as ambient. The edge is that hosting, not a claim that Kaluli invented ambient. Huli yodel leftover as a highland sibling, not a parent of this hop.
