Mapuche ceremonial

tradition · prehistoric–

Also called Mapuche song, tayül

Southern Andean ceremonial of the Mapuche: tayül lineage song, machi drum (kultrun), trutruka horn. This is a true southern-cone seed. Empty extra Received/Given is historically checked. It is not Andean ceremonial (the altiplano siku-and-hocket job) and not a leftover “South America” bin. Europe leftover as a refused parent. Stage tayül leftover as this job still living, not a child. Later Mapuche popular song leftover as a hop into another school, not drawn here.

Mechanism

Violeta Parra’s Wallmapu collecting (1957–58) takes Mapuche ül — lineage and ngillatun-adjacent song, machi rhythmic breaks — into her committed songbook (“Arauco tiene una pena,” “El guillatún,” cadence and gratitude rhetoric later heard in “Gracias a la vida”). Strength medium. The Andean siku kit leftover as andean ceremonial nueva cancion, a different hop. Quilapayún’s Mapudungun name leftover as testimony, not this mechanism.

Evidence

University of Chile tapes of Parra with ülkantufe; Miranda, Loncon, and Ramay on the Mapuche imprint in her post-1958 work; Grove on Parra as nueva canción’s folklore hinge.

Debate

Whether lyric solidarity is musical influence. The literature now ties specific rhythmic breaks and song-function (thanks-offering) to ül and ngillatun, not only to Spanish copla. Kultrun as a sounding lead in the classic nueva canción orchestra is still weaker than siku/quena; this edge is song and function, not a claim that nueva canción is Mapuche ceremony.
