Heard

Ska genre · 1959–

Rocksteady is ska slowed and thinned in the same Kingston rooms: the off-beat chop stays, the horn-forward instrumental recedes, and bass and vocal harmony become the product.

Influence
Soul genre · 1958–

Rocksteady takes soul’s ballad tempo, close vocal harmony, and electric-bass song and sits it on ska’s off-beat chop.

Rocksteady

genre · 1966–1968

Also called rock steady

The short Kingston hinge of 1966–68: ska’s off-beat chop kept, tempo dropped, horns thinned, and electric bass and close vocal harmony made the product (Alton Ellis, Paragons, Heptones, Hopeton Lewis). It hears Ska for the studio-and-skank job and Soul for the ballad tempo and close harmony. Doo-wop is not a second parent; soul already covers the vocal-group job. R&B and jazz wait one step back via ska. Rude-boy lyric is social face, not a node. rocksteady lovers rock waits one step (Reggae). Revival and British skinhead-reggae reception stay leftover. The 2 Tone cover book’s slower off-beat is rocksteady two tone. It is not a style of Ska and not yet Reggae (one-drop, heavier bass space, Rastafari as a default public code). The name is the records’ own.

Ska → Rocksteady

Mechanism

Rocksteady is ska slowed and thinned in the same Kingston rooms: the off-beat chop stays, the horn-forward instrumental recedes, and bass and vocal harmony become the product. Strength high. It is a successor school, not a dialect of ska.

Evidence

1966–68 Treasure Isle and Studio One books; Ellis’s “Rock Steady”; the same session players on slower cuts.

Debate

None on the succession. Whether a few 1966 records are “late ska” or “early rocksteady” is a dating argument, not a donor argument.

Mechanism

Rocksteady takes soul’s ballad tempo, close vocal harmony, and electric-bass song and sits it on ska’s off-beat chop. Strength high. rhythm and blues ska remains ska’s jump parent; this hop is the 1966 slowdown. soul lovers rock is the later UK hop.

Evidence

Ellis, Paragons, Heptones against Impressions-class soul ballads (Hebdige, Manuel).

Debate

Whether rocksteady is already reggae. The one-drop and Rasta default wait on reggae; the soul-ballad job is this hinge.

Rocksteady → Reggae

meter and grooveinstrumentationform and structuretimbre and productionstrength: highscholarly consensus1968–1972recordingoral

Mechanism

Reggae keeps rocksteady’s bass-forward electric combo, off-beat guitar, and single-plus-riddim industry, then spaces the drum (one-drop and kin) and opens a Rastafari lyric default. Strength high. Ska is the grandparent; this is the immediate parent.

Evidence

1968–70 Studio One and related books; Wailers and Maytals cuts that still sit next to rocksteady harmony-group practice; Hebdige and Manuel on the named succession.

Debate

Where rocksteady ends and reggae begins on a few 1968 labels. Consensus on the chassis; the name is the records’ own.

Rocksteady → Two-tone

melodyform and structuremeter and groovestrength: mediumscholarly consensus1979–1981recording

Mechanism

Two-tone takes rocksteady’s vocal-group songbook and slower off-beat into Coventry singles. Strength medium. ska two tone remains the public ska hop; this file is the rocksteady share of the covers (Dandy Livingstone, Treasure Isle).

Evidence

A Message to You Rudy and allied 2 Tone covers (Hebdige, Grove).

Debate

Whether ska already covers the book. The up-tempo chop is ska’s; several emblematic 2 Tone songs are rocksteady.
