Concert and small-group wing of Tango that Piazzolla names and fixes from the mid-1950s: tango phrasing and bandoneón kept, harmony, form, and improvisation opened toward jazz and toward written concert craft. It is a style of tango, not a leftover “Latin jazz” bin and not the 1980s social-dance fashion also called tango nuevo. Electro-tango leftover as a later fusion. 1980s open-embrace “tango nuevo” leftover as a floor fashion, not this compositional school. Ginastera/Boulanger concert craft leftover as pedagogy, not a second parent node. Empty Given is historically checked: later interpreters stay on this node.

Tango remains the groove, the bandoneón rhetoric, and the parent (tango tango nuevo). Do not treat nuevo as a style of jazz.

Piazzolla’s New York and Paris years; octet and quintet writing that leaves golden-age diatonic habit; Summit (1974) as the dated international meeting. Grove names jazz among nuevo’s donors.

Debate

U.S. and European marketing sometimes sold Piazzolla as jazz. Argentine histories keep the tango school first. Concert craft (Ginastera, Boulanger, fugue) is a real second donor and is unfiled; do not hang it on Romanticism or Baroque. Do not draw tango jazz for repertoire dates that merely quote a tango.

Tango nuevo is the parent school doing a new job: recital, octet, and album instead of the orquesta típica and the social milonga as the default. Bandoneón, arrastre, and tango/milonga pulse carry over. What changes is duration, dissonance, and the expectation of a concert set. Strength high: without tango there is nothing to concertize. Jazz is a donor on the child (jazz tango nuevo), not a second parent of the umbrella.

Debate

None on descent. Debate is only where electro-tango, European salon tango, or a jazz date that quotes La cumparsita leave this style for other nodes. The 1980s open-embrace dance called tango nuevo is a floor fashion, not this edge.
