Vedic chant

tradition · prehistoric–

Also called Sāmavedic chant, Samaveda, Vedic recitation

Oral recitation and song of the Vedas, especially the sung Sāmaveda: fixed text, trained pitch, and a guru path that is still living. The Nāṭyaśāstra frames nāṭya in a Vedic-Brahmanical world; that hop onto Sanskrit theatre is drawn as hypothesized ritual-function contact the treatise asserts, not a tape of Sāman becoming Kālidāsa. Avestan Gathic chant is a sibling from a shared Indo-Iranian ritual past, not a parent; that proto-practice is reconstructed and is not a node. It is not Hindustani classical, not a raga grammar, and not a leftover “ancient India” bin. Carnatic leftover as a later concert sibling, not a child.

Passed on

Sanskrit theatre tradition · 2nd century BCE–

The Nāṭyaśāstra places Vedic recitation and liturgical song in the preliminaries of drama (pāṭhya, gīta, pūrvaraṅga) as the ritual frame of nāṭya.

Mechanism

The Nāṭyaśāstra places Vedic recitation and liturgical song in the preliminaries of drama (pāṭhya, gīta, pūrvaraṅga) as the ritual frame of nāṭya. Strength low. Certainty hypothesized: this is the treatise’s own genealogy, not a tape of Sāman becoming Kālidāsa. Hindustani and Carnatic leftover as later concert siblings, not children of this hop.

Evidence

Grove and Wade on the treatise’s Vedic-Brahmanical framing of theatre music; surviving Kutiyattam leftover as a regional survival of the theatre node, not proof of Sāman pitch.

Debate

Whether a prestige genealogy is sounding influence. The files previously refused a parent edge for that reason. This hop keeps the claim in the graph as hypothesized ritual-function contact the treatise asserts, and says plainly that raga concert music is not Vedic chant. If a Sāman-to-stage melody is never shown, the edge should stay low and hypothesized, not be upgraded.
