Verbunkos

form · 1760–

Also called verbunk, Werbung dance

Hungarian recruiting dance-music of the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries: a slow dotted lassú and a fast virtuosic friss, played by professional bands (often Roma) for enlistment and then for the tavern. It is a form, the named parent of Csárdás, and a donor of the art-music style hongrois (Romanticism). It is not a leftover “Hungarian folk” bin and not Monti’s salon Csárdás. Empty Received is historically checked. Hungarian folk leftover as a refused catch-all. Gypsy music leftover as a refused catch-all. European military march leftover as a different outdoor job, already refused as a parent.

Passed on

Csárdás form · 1830–

Csárdás keeps the lassú–friss pair and the professional band sound, and moves them from recruiting ground to the inn as a couple dance.

Influence
Romanticism movement · 1810–1910

Romantic concert music takes the verbunkos band idiom — dotted lassú, running friss, augmented-second color — as a national topic (style hongrois).

Verbunkos → Csárdás

Mechanism

Csárdás keeps the lassú–friss pair and the professional band sound, and moves them from recruiting ground to the inn as a couple dance. Strength high: without verbunkos the named tavern form is hard to tell. Village couple-dances sit nearby and are not a second filed parent.

Evidence

Standard histories derive csárdás from verbunkos; the same band kit and slow–fast rhetoric; Grove on both headwords. Recruiting ends as a legal job (1849); the music stays as csárdás.

Debate

How much is new dance versus a renamed verbunkos. Consensus: the couple-dance and the csárda name are a real later form; the musical pair is inherited. Do not hang Monti’s salon piece on this edge.

Verbunkos → Romanticism

Mechanism

Romantic concert music takes the verbunkos band idiom — dotted lassú, running friss, augmented-second color — as a national topic (style hongrois). Strength medium: definitional for the Hungarian rhapsody and dance sets, not for Romanticism as a whole. The hop is into art music, not the other way around. Monti and café “czardas” are later salon cousins, not this edge’s target.

Evidence

Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies; Brahms’s Hungarian Dances; Bellman’s account of the style hongrois as verbunkos-derived. Haydn and Schubert already hear an earlier layer; the named Romantic objects are Liszt and Brahms.

Debate

Whether the source is village folk song or Roma-band verbunkos. Consensus for the concert idiom: the professional band style, not a peasant transcription. Do not draw csardas romanticism as a second origin hop; the art-music topic is verbunkos-shaped.
