Canto a tenore

tradition · prehistoric–

Also called cantu a tenore, Sardinian tenore

Sardinian pastoral four-voice singing from Barbagia: a solo boghe plus three accompanying parts (mesu boghe, contra, bassu) whose guttural overtones make a chordal drone under the verse. It is a tradition, not a leftover “Italian folk” bin and not Georgian polyphony (a typological sibling, not a donor; that hop is refused). Empty Received and Given are historically checked (lineage: closed). Holy Week Cuncordu leftover as a different Sardinian school that hangs on Falsobordone, not on this file. Cantu a chiterra leftover as the guitar-song sibling. Paghjella and Genoese trallalero leftover as Mediterranean multipart siblings, not parents or children. Launeddas leftover as kit, not a parent. Festival tenore leftover as continuity, not Worldbeat.

Mechanism

Late-1990s worldbeat takes Sardinian tenore — four-voice guttural chord under a solo boghe — as a featured guest vocal on the Real World / festival circuit. Strength medium for those records; not definitional of worldbeat. Village tenore is not a child.

Evidence

Tenores di Bitti S’amore ’e Mama (Real World, 1996); Peter Gabriel’s label as the named host; Grove on concert tenore after village practice; Lortat-Jacob on the donor craft.

Debate

Whether a Real World album is still tenore or already worldbeat. The edge applies when the tenore chord is hosted inside a cosmopolitan label/festival frame, not when four men sing in the circle at home. UNESCO listing leftover as recognition, not a hop.
