Cool jazz
Also called cool, West Coast jazz
Kind of Jazz
Late-1940s–50s jazz that keeps bebop’s chorus forms and chromatic language, then lowers the surface: lighter attack, arranged counterpoint, and a listening-room dynamic (Davis Nonet / Birth of the Cool, Tristano, MJQ, Mulligan–Baker, later Brubeck). It is a style of jazz and a sibling fork of Hard bop from the same Bebop school, not a rejection of bop and not an alias of Modal jazz. “West Coast jazz” is the California wing, not a second system. Third stream is the named concert child.
