Bebop
Also called bop
Kind of Jazz
Small-group modern jazz of the early 1940s, associated with Parker, Gillespie, Monk, Powell, and Clarke: faster harmonic rhythm, chromatic approach tones, and a shift from dance-floor function toward listening and professional virtuosity. DeVeaux’s point stands — bebop grows out of late swing competence, it does not drop from the sky. Stride piano is the Harlem keyboard craft. Cubop leftover as a Gillespie/Pozo meeting already carried by cuban son jazz, not a second node.
