The 1980s naming of the Sabbath line inside metal: slow or half-time riffs, down-tuned weight, and a lyric world of dread, occult, or endurance rather than speed or glam display. Saint Vitus, Candlemass, and the earlier UK proto (Witchfinder General, early Pentagram) are the usual core. It is a style of heavy metal, not a second genre and not a bin for every slow guitar band. Stoner, sludge, and drone are later children.
