Also called goth metal

Kind of Heavy metal

The early-1990s metal style that takes death-doom’s slow weight and adds clean or dual vocals, minor-key melody, and a romantic or morbid lyric world (Paradise Lost’s Gothic, 1991; My Dying Bride; later Theatre of Tragedy and Within Temptation’s first records). It is a style of heavy metal, not a kind of Gothic rock and not an alias of Symphonic metal. Death and doom are the musical donors. Gothic rock is aesthetic incoming (mood, vocal, look), not a parent genre.

Symphonic metal style · 1996–

The Dutch and related wing keeps gothic metal’s clean (often female) lead, mid-tempo dark verse–chorus, and romantic stance, then replaces keyboard color with orchestra as the bed.

Death metal → Gothic metal

timbre and productionperformance practiceharmonystrength: highwell documented1990–1995recordingoral

Mechanism

Gothic metal begins as death (and death-doom) bands opening the mix: growl beside or under clean voice, slower harmonic rhythm, and a romantic lyric. Paradise Lost’s Gothic is the usual naming hinge. Strength high on the 1991–95 core. Later Dutch records keep the metal band and drop more of the death grammar.

Evidence

Peaceville personnel who start as death-doom and are marketed as gothic within a few years. The guitar-and-growl residue is still death metal even when the song has become a dark verse–chorus.

Debate

How much is doom rather than death. Both incoming edges are kept. Gothic rock as an aesthetic donor waits for a node.

Doom metal → Gothic metal

meter and groovetimbre and productionform and structurestrength: highwell documented1990–1995recordingoral

Mechanism

The Peaceville turn keeps doom’s clock and weight — slow riffs, long forms, dread — and adds clean melody. “Death-doom” is the hinge name; this edge is the doom half. Strength high on My Dying Bride and early Paradise Lost; thinner on later radio gothic metal.

Evidence

Early-1990s Peaceville records that are still doom-tempo pieces with a new vocal and lyric color. Sabbath-via-doom is the remote object (Cope); the named 1980s doom style is the near donor.

Debate

Whether gothic metal “is” just doom with a singer. The corpus splits them once clean vocals and goth-club identity become the public default.

Gothic rock → Gothic metal

melodytimbre and productionperformance practicestrength: mediumwell documented1991–1996recording

Mechanism

Gothic metal keeps death-doom’s weight (already filed) and imports gothic rock’s usable surface: minor-key melody, clean or dual dramatic vocal, reverb/atmosphere, and a club-dark look. Strength medium: death and doom are the heavier musical donors; this is mood, vocal, and image. Taxonomy stays under Heavy metal.

Evidence

Paradise Lost’s Gothic (1991) and the Peaceville turn; later Dutch/female-fronted records that still sit on metal riffs. Grove and Kahn-Harris treat the goth name as an overlay on extreme metal, not as a kind-of relation.

Debate

Whether gothic metal is “goth with guitars.” No: the riff grammar is metal. This edge is the aesthetic incoming the gothic-metal file already promised.

Gothic metal → Symphonic metal

melodytimbre and productionperformance practicestrength: highwell documented1997–2004recordingradio

Mechanism

The Dutch and related wing keeps gothic metal’s clean (often female) lead, mid-tempo dark verse–chorus, and romantic stance, then replaces keyboard color with orchestra as the bed. Within Temptation’s move after the first records is the usual case. Strength high on that wing; Nightwish is the power-metal edge instead.

Evidence

Early Within Temptation as gothic metal; later albums and the festival circuit as orchestral-default metal. Epica and neighbors sit on the same path with more growl residue.

Debate

Press often uses “gothic” and “symphonic” as synonyms for any female-fronted metal. The corpus splits them by texture: keys-and-mood versus orchestra-as-structure.
