Formosan song

tradition · prehistoric–

Also called Taiwan indigenous song, Formosan indigenous song

Indigenous song of Taiwan: living Formosan-language repertories (Amis polyphony, Bunun pasibutbut, Paiwan ceremonial song). This is a Taiwan seed. Empty Received/Given is historically checked. It is not Yayue, not a leftover proto-Austronesian bin, and not one ethnic playlist. Linguistic Out-of-Taiwan is not a sounding parent of later Pacific chant: Formosan multipart habits do not survive the Philippines hop (Blench). Ifugao hudhud, Micronesian chant, and Polynesian chant leftover as later named schools, not children of this file. The Amis sample in Enigma leftover as a featured color, not a school hop. Japanese and Han contact leftover as public-life recoding, not parents.

Mechanism

1990s worldbeat takes Amis (Formosan) polyphonic chant as a sampled ostinato inside verse–chorus electronic production. Strength medium for the named hit; not definitional of worldbeat. Village song is not a child.

Evidence

Enigma’s “Return to Innocence” (1993) samples Difang and Igay Duana’s Amis drinking/weeding song from a Maison des Cultures du Monde disc; 1996 Olympics use; 1997–99 settlement (Guy, Taylor). Feld’s sampling ethics apply to the same circuit as Deep Forest.

Debate

Whether an unauthorized sample is “influence.” The hop is sounding and historical: a Formosan vocal is the audible brand of a worldbeat single. Payment and credit are the debate, not whether the timbre transferred. Do not treat this as a parent of Polynesian chant.
