Kind of Jazz

Late-1950s–60s jazz that keeps improvising ensembles and then drops obligatory chorus changes and fixed meter as the law: collective blowing, pitch as energy, and heads that may be only a cry (Coleman, Taylor, Ayler, late Coltrane). It is a style of jazz and a later fork from Bebop competence, not a rejection of jazz and not an alias of Jazz fusion. Coltrane’s modal vamps are one path in (modal jazz free jazz). European free improvisation leftover as a reception wing, not a second origin. AACM leftover as a Chicago association. Loft-jazz leftover as a 1970s continuation. Punk and noise refused as children on artist quotes.

Bebop → Free jazz

performance practicemelodyform and structurestrength: mediumscholarly consensus1959–1965oralrecording

Mechanism

Free jazz is played by musicians who already have bebop time, motive, and small-group speech, then drop obligatory chorus changes. Strength medium. It is not a folk naïveté and not a European modernist import as the origin. Coleman’s harmolodic later theory names a practice that still hears bop phrasing.

Evidence

Coleman’s early Texas/L.A. bop literacy; Coltrane’s path from sheets-of-sound changes to Ascension; Taylor’s virtuoso density as a piano analogue of bop speed.

Debate

Whether free jazz “rejects” bebop. Public rhetoric often said so; the sounding technique is a continuation that removes the harmonic law.

Modal jazz → Free jazz

harmonyform and structureperformance practicestrength: mediumscholarly consensus1960–1966oralrecording

Mechanism

Free jazz takes modal jazz’s suspended center — long vamps, fewer cadences — and lets meter and chorus form go. Strength medium. Coleman and Taylor are not Coltrane students; this hop is Coltrane’s (and late Davis’s) path from Kind of Blue vamps to Ascension. bebop free jazz remains the competence parent.

Evidence

Coltrane 1961–65 vamps (Impressions, A Love Supreme) then 1965–66 collective records; Grove on the modal-to-free studio line.

Debate

Whether free jazz needs modal jazz. Ornette’s 1959 quartet does not. The edge is one named path inside the school, not the origin of the school.
