Heard

Yanyue tradition · 7th century–10th century

Gagaku’s tōgaku wing keeps Tang yanyue suite pieces and banquet-band craft and turns them into a Japanese palace school.

Influence

Gagaku

tradition · 8th century–

Also called Japanese court music, togaku, 雅樂

Japanese court orchestra and dance: togaku, komagaku, and indigenous song-dance (kuniburi no utamai), kept as a palace and shrine job from Nara–Heian into the living Imperial Household school. Tōgaku is Tang banquet music (yanyue), not Zhou sacrificial Yayue; the shared name 雅樂 / 雅楽 is not a sounding parent. It is not Aak (a Confucian-ritual child of yayue), not Yayue under another name, and not Noh. Komagaku leftover as a wing on this node. Empty extra Received/Given is historically checked: concert gagaku abroad is spread, not a second genre.

Mechanism

Gagaku’s tōgaku wing keeps Tang yanyue suite pieces and banquet-band craft and turns them into a Japanese palace school. Strength high. Zhou Yayue is a different job and is not drawn.

Evidence

Nara–Heian offices gathering Tang pieces; Grove on tōgaku as banquet music, not sacrificial yayue.

Debate

Whether the shared graph 雅樂 already makes yayue the parent. The sounding repertory is banquet yanyue; the sacrificial school stays on yayue aak.

Gagaku → Minimalism

timbre and productionform and structureperformance practicestrength: mediumwell documented1958–1963oralpatronagepedagogy

Mechanism

U.S. and French postwar concert music takes gagaku’s sustained shō clusters, hichiriki line, and ritual stasis as a model of long duration and wind-organ timbre. Strength medium. javanese gamelan minimalism is the colotomic-process hop (Riley/Reich); this edge is drone and court-wind color (Young, Harrison’s Pacifika Rondo, Messiaen’s “Gagaku” movement). American gamelan leftover as Harrison’s later built-ensemble job, not this 1958–63 hop.

Evidence

Young’s early drone works in a gagaku-aware West Coast circle; Harrison Pacifika Rondo (1963); Messiaen Sept haïkaï (1962), mvt. “Gagaku,” with shō-like violin clusters and hichiriki-like brass (Irlandini; Grove). Miller and Lieberman on Harrison’s Asian court listening.

Debate

Messiaen is not a minimalist; he is cited as parallel Western hearing of the same gagaku timbre, not as this target’s definition. Young’s drone also hears Hindustani and just intonation. The edge is the gagaku-shaped stasis/timbre inside the minimalist toolkit, not a claim that gagaku equals In C. Britten’s Curlew River leftover as nō, not gagaku.
