Gabber style · 1992–

Hardstyle keeps gabber’s distorted kick and Dutch rave public and retunes them to a mid-tempo festival drop.

Influence
Trance genre · 1991–

Hardstyle takes trance’s long build, breakdown, and synth-lead release and hangs them on a gabber-derived kick.

Hardstyle

genre · 2000–

Also called Dutch hardstyle

Early-2000s Dutch festival hard dance: a compressed reverse-bass or distorted kick around 150, a screeching synth lead, and a sports-hall drop (The Prophet, later Headhunterz). It hears Gabber for the overdriven kick and rave public and Trance for the build-and-lead drop. Hardcore as a leftover market bin stays unfiled. Jumpstyle and rawstyle leftover (rawstyle stays a wing on this node).

Gabber → Hardstyle

meter and groovetimbre and productionfunction and contextstrength: highscholarly consensus2000–2004recordingdance

Mechanism

Hardstyle keeps gabber’s distorted kick and Dutch rave public and retunes them to a mid-tempo festival drop. Strength high. trance hardstyle is the build-and-lead hop; this hop is the gabber kick.

Evidence

Early Q-dance / Prophet-era sides against 1990s Thunderdome gabber (Grove).

Debate

Whether this is a gabber continuation. The kick family is gabber’s; the 150 reverse-bass festival song is hardstyle’s.

form and structuremelodymeter and groovestrength: mediumscholarly consensus2000–2004recordingdance

Mechanism

Hardstyle takes trance’s long build, breakdown, and synth-lead release and hangs them on a gabber-derived kick. Strength medium. gabber hardstyle remains the kick parent; this hop is the festival-trance song.

Evidence

Early Q-dance hardstyle against late-1990s trance festival form (Grove).

Debate

Whether gabber already covers it. The distorted kick is gabber’s; the crescendo-and-lead drop is trance’s.
