style · 1992–

Also called gabba, Rotterdam hardcore

Kind of Techno

Early-1990s Rotterdam hardcore: distorted kick at extreme tempo, shouted hook, and a working-class rave public (Thunderdome). It is a style of Techno. It also hears New beat for the slow Belgian club body Rotterdam then sped up. UK Breakbeat hardcore is a sibling rave school, not a parent. Industrial leftover as a meeting, not a parent. The sweetened kick is Happy hardcore; the later Dutch festival retune is Hardstyle.

Influence
Hardstyle genre · 2000–

Hardstyle keeps gabber’s distorted kick and Dutch rave public and retunes them to a mid-tempo festival drop.

meter and groovetimbre and productionfunction and contextstrength: mediumscholarly consensus1991–1995recordingdance

Mechanism

Gabber takes new beat’s slow, heavy Belgian 4/4 — pitched-down body-music bass, slogan vocal, warehouse PA — and recodes it at a much faster Rotterdam tempo. Strength medium. Detroit Techno leftover as the other sequenced parent (other edge). This hop is the Low Countries club floor, not a claim that new beat became Detroit techno.

Evidence

1991–95 Dutch/Belgian hardcore from new-beat rooms sped up in Rotterdam warehouses (Grove; Starr).

Debate

Whether gabber simply is new beat at double speed. The named slow Belgian club style is new beat’s; the named Rotterdam hardcore is the recoding. Techno remains a separate sequenced parent.

Mechanism

Gabber is techno’s kick raised, distorted, and sped for a Rotterdam rave floor. Strength high. It is a style of techno, not a leftover “hardcore” bin. Breakbeat hardcore is a UK sibling, not this parent.

Evidence

Poing and Thunderdome-era sides against Detroit/Belgian techno fours (Grove).

Debate

Whether this is already rave leftover. The named Rotterdam school and the distorted four make a node.

Mechanism

Hardstyle keeps gabber’s distorted kick and Dutch rave public and retunes them to a mid-tempo festival drop. Strength high. trance hardstyle is the build-and-lead hop; this hop is the gabber kick.

Evidence

Early Q-dance / Prophet-era sides against 1990s Thunderdome gabber (Grove).

Debate

Whether this is a gabber continuation. The kick family is gabber’s; the 150 reverse-bass festival song is hardstyle’s.
