Heard

Renaissance polyphony style · 1420–1600

The sung intermedio is written by the same court musicians who write madrigals and chapel polyphony.

Influence

Italian intermedio

form · 1480–1600

Also called intermedi, Florentine intermedio, intermezzo (Renaissance)

Italian court spectacle between the acts of a play: mythological tableaux, machines, chorus, and dance. The 1589 Pellegrina intermedi are the usual climax. This is the spectacle parent of French Ballet de cour (Beaujoyeulx brings the job to Paris). It already gives Baroque the spectacular stage. Camerata leftover as a Florentine talk-circle on the way to opera, not a parent of this node. Opera leftover as the later lyric-theatre recoding on Baroque. It is not Academic ballet, and not a style of Renaissance polyphony — it uses that language for a different floor.

Passed on

Ballet de cour form · 1580–1670

Beaujoyeulx and other Italian festival workers bring the intermedio job to Paris: allegory, machines, sung wonders between (or instead of) a play.

Influence
Baroque style · 1600–1750

Early Baroque opera takes the intermedio’s job — myth as spectacle, mixed court band, spatial surprise — and makes it the whole evening.

Mechanism

Intermedi are not only sung wonders. They stage the ballo the court already knows — measured steps inside Olympus. Strength medium: dance is a number, not the evening’s spine (that becomes ballet de cour).

Evidence

Dance tableaux in Medici festivals; 1589 numbers built on court meters; Grove on intermedio as mixed spectacle.

Debate

How much of an intermedio is dance versus machine and chorus varies by night. This edge is the body, not the madrigal writing.

Renaissance polyphony → Italian intermedio

Mechanism

The sung intermedio is written by the same court musicians who write madrigals and chapel polyphony. Texture, modal harmony, and declamatory late-century melody move onto a festival stage with machines and extra band. Strength medium. The floor’s job (allegory between acts) is not a Mass.

Evidence

1589 Pellegrina numbers by Marenzio, Caccini, Cavalieri, Malvezzi; Atlas on the late madrigal and festival culture. This is the umbrella hop; a separate madrigal node would be a tighter later child.

Debate

Early opera is a sibling exit (stile rappresentativo), not this edge’s target. Do not hang ballet de cour directly on Josquin.

Mechanism

Beaujoyeulx and other Italian festival workers bring the intermedio job to Paris: allegory, machines, sung wonders between (or instead of) a play. The French night makes dance the continuous spine. Strength high for spectacle and political floor. The counted noble step is the other incoming edge (Renaissance court dance).

Evidence

Ballet Comique de la Reine (1581); Grove on ballet de cour as an Italianizing French form; 1589 Pellegrina as the Italian object being recoded.

Debate

English masque is a sibling, not a parent. Early opera (Peri, Caccini) is a parallel exit from the same Florentine world, not this hop. Do not treat Giselle as hearing intermedi.

Italian intermedio → Baroque

form and structureperformance practicefunction and contexttimbre and productionstrength: highscholarly consensus1580–1610patronagenotationoral

Mechanism

Early Baroque opera takes the intermedio’s job — myth as spectacle, mixed court band, spatial surprise — and makes it the whole evening. Recitar cantando and basso continuo turn a sequence of closed tableaux into continuous dramatic song. Strength high for form and function. Chapel polyphony remains the other parent (renaissance polyphony baroque).

Evidence

The 1589 Pellegrina intermedi (Caccini, Cavalieri, Marenzio) as the published type; Peri’s Euridice (1600) and Monteverdi’s Orfeo (1607) as the recoding. Same courts, many of the same musicians.

Debate

Whether 1600 is a rupture or a name for trends already audible in Ferrara and Florence. Consensus: the intermedio is the theatrical parent; monody treatises are the craft argument. Do not treat ballet de cour as this hop (that is a French dance recoding of the same night).
