It is treated here as a style of heavy metal because that is how it was sold and fought over; underground scenes denied the name (same boundary work as glam). Hip-hop and Groove metal are the definitional donors. Grunge is a medium song-and-timbre gift. Industrial metal supplies machine pulse and sample color.
