Heard

Hard rock style · 1968–

Grunge takes hard rock’s distorted riff, doubled guitar, and high-volume singer and runs them in a punk/indie club.

Influence
Hardcore punk style · 1979–

Northwest bands take hardcore’s volume, DIY touring, and permission to be ugly or slow (Flag’s later records, Melvins) into a heavier club music.

Influence
Heavy metal genre · 1970–

Grunge borrows metal’s riff-as-weight: down-tuned or muddy power chords, occasional tritone/Aeolian color, and Sabbath as homework.

Influence
Indie rock style · 1983–

Grunge inherits the 1980s indie circuit — vans, independents, college radio, SST-type guitar crunch — and then adds Sabbath weight and punk wreckage (already filed).

Influence
Punk genre · 1975–

Grunge keeps punk’s song wreckage, unpretty vocal, and anyone-can-play public code, then adds weight from metal (other edge).

genre · 1986–1996

Also called Seattle sound

A late-1980s Pacific Northwest guitar style that mixes punk/hardcore ethics and song wreckage with Sabbath-weight riffs and dropped or muddy tunings (Azerrad, Yarm). Green River, Melvins, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam are the usual span — not one band’s sound. It is its own genre, not a style of metal and not a style of punk. Both are donors. The named boom is roughly 1986 (Deep Six / Sub Pop) to the mid-1990s market crash.

Passed on

Nu metal style · 1994–2003

Nu metal inherits grunge’s permission to be ugly on the radio: downtuned murk, loud-quiet songs, and a refusal of twin-lead display.

Influence

Hard rock → Grunge

timbre and productionphrase and lickperformance practicestrength: highwell documented1986–1992recordingoral

Mechanism

Grunge takes hard rock’s distorted riff, doubled guitar, and high-volume singer and runs them in a punk/indie club. Strength high. Metal already supplies the Sabbath-side riff grammar; this hop is the Zeppelin/Purple blues-rock residue (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam). Alternative leftover as a market tag.

Evidence

Seattle oral history in Yarm; Sub Pop loud bands in Azerrad; Grove’s hard-rock line into grunge.

Debate

Whether this is already metal. Cope/Weinstein keep Zeppelin-class catalogs on hard rock; Seattle heard both files. The metal hop is the other parent.

Hardcore punk → Grunge

timbre and productionperformance practicemeter and groovestrength: mediumwell documented1984–1991oralrecording

Mechanism

Northwest bands take hardcore’s volume, DIY touring, and permission to be ugly or slow (Flag’s later records, Melvins) into a heavier club music. Strength medium: definitional for Melvins/Tad; thinner on Pearl Jam. The 1977 punk song edge is the other incoming. Not every grunge band is a hardcore band.

Evidence

Melvins as a hardcore-descended sludge practice; early Soundgarden and Tad in the same hall circuit (Azerrad, Yarm). Independent ethics continue after the major-label moment.

Debate

Whether this is just “punk” already covered. The corpus splits them: first-wave song grammar versus the U.S. 1980s intensification of volume and circuit that Seattle actually copied.

Heavy metal → Grunge

harmonyphrase and licktimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1984–1992recordingoral

Mechanism

Grunge borrows metal’s riff-as-weight: down-tuned or muddy power chords, occasional tritone/Aeolian color, and Sabbath as homework. It does not take thrash chug, glam gloss, or the guitar cadenza as defaults. Strength medium: definitional for Soundgarden and Melvins; weaker on the Nirvana/Mudhoney wing. Punk explains the song and the stance; metal explains the sludge.

Evidence

Scene interviews naming Sabbath (Yarm); Soundgarden riffs that read as metal cells in drop tunings; Melvins as a slow-heavy practice that still comes from the 1970 object (Cope).

Debate

Whether the donor is Doom metal rather than the 1970 umbrella. Doom names the 1980s conservation of that object; Seattle musicians cite Sabbath more often than Candlemass. This edge stays on Heavy metal. Grunge is not a metal style.

Indie rock → Grunge

performance practiceform and structuretimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1986–1992recordingoral

Mechanism

Grunge inherits the 1980s indie circuit — vans, independents, college radio, SST-type guitar crunch — and then adds Sabbath weight and punk wreckage (already filed). Strength medium: punk, hardcore, and metal are the heavier sound donors; this edge is the underground song institution Seattle was already in (Azerrad, Yarm).

Evidence

Sub Pop as an indie label; Mudhoney/Green River as song bands on that circuit; Hüsker as a named loud-indie model.

Debate

Whether grunge “is” indie rock. The corpus keeps grunge as its own genre: the metal/hardcore weight is not the R.E.M. job.

Mediators

artist: Hüsker Dü; artist: Mudhoney

Punk → Grunge

form and structureperformance practicemelodystrength: highwell documented1984–1992oralrecording

Mechanism

Grunge keeps punk’s song wreckage, unpretty vocal, and anyone-can-play public code, then adds weight from metal (other edge). Mudhoney and Nirvana are the clear punk-facing wing; the whole node still treats virtuoso metal and glam as what not to be. Strength high on form, stance, and melody; timbre-as-sludge is not this transfer.

Evidence

Green River / Mudhoney as punk bands that get heavier; Nirvana’s songwriting still reads as punk verse–chorus (Azerrad, Yarm). Sub Pop as a punk-descended label institution.

Debate

How much is 1977 punk versus 1980s indie/college rock. The latter waits for a node. This edge is the punk grammar actually audible on the Seattle records.

Mediators

artist: Mudhoney; artist: Nirvana

Grunge → Nu metal

timbre and productionform and structureperformance practicestrength: mediumwell documented1994–1999recordingradio

Mechanism

Nu metal inherits grunge’s permission to be ugly on the radio: downtuned murk, loud-quiet songs, and a refusal of twin-lead display. Strength medium: definitional for mood and market; the bounce and the rap are the other edges. Not every nu-metal band is a Seattle copy.

Evidence

Mid-1990s bands that treat Nevermind-era radio as the previous youth default (Starr); Korn’s early affect next to grunge’s unpretty vocal.

Debate

Whether alternative metal (Faith No More, Jane’s Addiction) is the nearer parent. That waits for a node. This edge is the 1991–94 grunge radio fact actually in the corpus.
