Heard

Romanticism movement · 1810–1910

The public ottava of the nineteenth century — fairs, collections, national color — hears romantic folklore culture.

Influence
Troubadour genre · 1100–1300

Ottava rima hears an earlier sung-poetry job: strophic verse, a reciter, improvisation inside a known stanza.

Influence

Ottava rima

form · 14th century–

Also called cantari in ottava, poesia a braccio

Improvised or recited eight-line heroic verse sung in central Italy (ABABABCC), the popular musical life of a Renaissance literary stanza. It is a form, not a leftover “Tuscan folk” bin. Rispetto stays on this node. Stornello is the shorter sibling, not a parent or child. It hears Troubadour as an earlier sung-poetry job (contested) and Romanticism as the nineteenth-century public/folklorist stage. Empty extra Given is historically checked: fair and contest stay on this node. Canzone napoletana leftover as a different song school, not a parent. Medieval dance leftover as a refused hang.

function and contextperformance practicestrength: mediumwell documented1820–1900oralpatronage

Mechanism

The public ottava of the nineteenth century — fairs, collections, national color — hears romantic folklore culture. Strength medium for that wing, not for every earlier a braccio reciter.

Evidence

Nineteenth-century collection and staging of Tuscan improvised verse; the same century’s interest in national song.

Debate

Whether this invents ottava. No: it publicizes a living form. The form itself is older.

form and structureperformance practicemelodystrength: mediumcontested1300–1600oralnotation

Mechanism

Ottava rima hears an earlier sung-poetry job: strophic verse, a reciter, improvisation inside a known stanza. Strength medium, certainty contested. This is not a claim that canso became Tuscan ottava.

Evidence

Continuity of sung narrative and debate verse in Romance Europe; literary ottava as a later Italian stanza; Aubrey’s limits on what troubadour melody can prove.

Debate

Four centuries and a language change. Alternative: empty Received except leftover Italian recitation. Keep as a job-rhyme, not a tune hop. Do not draw Versus as a second medieval parent.
