Heard

Romanticism movement · 1810–1910

Nineteenth-century collection and stage make stornello a public Italian type.

Influence
Troubadour genre · 1100–1300

Stornello may hear the short debate-song job of earlier Romance sung poetry.

Influence

Stornello

form · 16th century–

Also called stornelli

Short improvised or traditional Italian verse-song, often a three-line cell, used for wit, courtship, and contest in Tuscany and central Italy. It is a form, the shorter sibling of Ottava rima, not a leftover “Italian folk” bin. It hears contested Troubadour job-rhyme and Romanticism as public folklore. Empty extra Given is historically checked: osteria and revival stage stay on this node. Ottava rima leftover as a sibling, not a parent or child. Canzone napoletana leftover as a different song school, not a parent.

Passed on

Nothing in the corpus yet that this genre passed on.

Romanticism → Stornello

function and contextperformance practicestrength: mediumwell documented1820–1900oralnotation

Mechanism

Nineteenth-century collection and stage make stornello a public Italian type. Strength medium for that wing.

Evidence

Printed stornelli; popular-song use of the name; the same folklorist century as ottava’s public wing.

Debate

The short form is older than the collections. This hop is the public life, not the invention.

Troubadour → Stornello

form and structureperformance practicestrength: lowcontested1500–1800oral

Mechanism

Stornello may hear the short debate-song job of earlier Romance sung poetry. Strength low, thinner than the ottava hop.

Evidence

Stornello as contest wit; troubadour tenso as a typological cousin; no dated tune pair.

Debate

Very long and thin. Keep as contested job-rhyme. Do not collapse stornello into ottava.
