Russian musical nationalism
Also called Mighty Handful, The Five, kuchka, Russian national school
Nineteenth-century Russian concert program that treats folk song, church chant color, and “oriental” topics as a national orchestral and operatic idiom: Glinka, then the kuchka (Balakirev, Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin). It hears Romanticism for the concert-nationalist job and Slavic Orthodox chant for znamenny and church-mode color. It already gives Impressionism the Mussorgsky/Rimsky color Debussy studied. “Russian folk” leftover as a catch-all, not a parent. Tchaikovsky leftover as a cosmopolitan sibling, not this school’s law. Italian opera leftover as a vehicle Glinka heard, not a second parent. Orientalism leftover as a topic on this node.
