Heard

Cakewalk genre · 1850–1910

French musical impressionism takes the published cakewalk as a named American dance cell: syncopated 2/4, walking bass, and cakewalk strain form.

Influence
Javanese gamelan tradition · 8th century–

Debussy hears a Javanese court ensemble at the 1889 Paris Exposition and takes home color and layer, not a gendhing.

Influence
Romanticism movement · 1810–1910

Impressionism is late Romantic concert craft with the argument turned down.

Influence
Russian musical nationalism movement · 1836–1910

Impressionism takes kuchka color — Mussorgsky’s speech-melody and modal harmony, Rimsky’s orchestral paint — as a donor beside Wagner.

Influence

Impressionism

style · 1890–1920

Also called musical impressionism, French impressionism

French concert style around 1890–1920 that treats harmony and orchestra as color: parallel streams, modal and pentatonic collections, pedal haze, and piano writing that is more veil than argument. Debussy is the center; Ravel is the other usual name. The label is a critic’s word Debussy disliked; the node is the named practice, not a claim that these pieces depict Monet. It hears Romanticism for Conservatoire craft, Javanese gamelan for the 1889 jolt, Cakewalk for the American dance topic, and Russian musical nationalism for Mussorgsky/Rimsky color. Wagner leftover inside Romanticism. Symbolism leftover as literature. Later French modernism (Messiaen) leftover as a later school. Film music leftover as a later concert-color job.

Passed on

Bossa nova genre · 1958–

Jobim’s generation takes French color harmony — added-note sonorities, planed streams, pedal haze — into nylon-guitar chamber song.

Influence
Jazz genre · 1910–

Jazz takes color harmony from the French concert dialect: ninths, added-note sonorities, parallel streams, and a pedal that does not have to resolve as a dominant.

Influence
Spanish musical nationalism movement · 1890–1940

Falla’s generation takes French late-tonal craft — added-note harmony, pedal, orchestra as painted atmosphere — and writes Spanish topics in that dialect.

Cakewalk → Impressionism

rhythmmelodyform and structurestrength: mediumwell documented1908–1913notationdance

Mechanism

French musical impressionism takes the published cakewalk as a named American dance cell: syncopated 2/4, walking bass, and cakewalk strain form. Strength medium. Debussy’s Golliwogg's Cakewalk (1908) is the dated hinge. The hop is fashionable uptake, not a second cakewalk school; Debussy stays on Impressionism.

Evidence

Children's Corner; the explicit title and ragging of a square pulse; Grove on cakewalk in European art music. Ragtime is a sibling published syncopation; this edge is the dance Debussy names.

Debate

Whether this is ragtime rather than cakewalk. Debussy titles a cakewalk. European art-music cakewalks are reception of this node, not a child node.

Javanese gamelan → Impressionism

timbre and productionmelodymeter and groovestrength: mediumwell documented1889–1910oralpatronage

Mechanism

Debussy hears a Javanese court ensemble at the 1889 Paris Exposition and takes home color and layer, not a gendhing. Pentatonic collection, stacked ostinati, and low-register piano-as-gong become part of the Impressionist piano and orchestral dialect. What does not transfer is slendro/pelog as systems, colotomic form as irama, or court etiquette. Strength medium: high for Pagodes and kindred textures, not for Pelléas harmony as a whole.

Evidence

Dated 1889 attendance and later remarks; Pagodes (1903) as the checkable piano object; Taruskin on the pentatonic/layered habit after the Exposition. Sumarsam on the colonial fair as the contact room, and on how little of Javanese theory that room taught.

Debate

Pentatonic is not slendro. Whole-tone and parallel-ninth harmony are French late-tonal tools, not bronze-ensemble grammar. Ravel’s gamelan debt is thinner than Debussy’s. Do not read this edge as “Impressionism is gamelan,” and do not park the 1889 hop on Romanticism.

Romanticism → Impressionism

harmonytimbre and productionform and structureinstrumentationstrength: highscholarly consensus1885–1910pedagogynotationpatronage

Mechanism

Impressionism is late Romantic concert craft with the argument turned down. Conservatoire harmony, the character piece, the enlarged orchestra, and Wagnerian/Russian color listening are the school. Debussy and Ravel keep the piano and the orchestra and stop treating dominant arrival as the point. Strength high. The Javanese edge is a documented jolt inside this language, not a replacement for it.

Evidence

Debussy’s Conservatoire training and Prix de Rome years; Faune as a post-Wagner orchestral span; piano preludes that still live in the Romantic character-piece rack. Plantinga’s late-century harmony and Taruskin’s Debussy chapters are the usual account.

Debate

Whether Impressionism is still Romanticism. The corpus splits them: Romanticism keeps Wagner, Liszt, and Mahler; this node starts when color and floating pulse become the French public style. Russian and symbolist donors are real and not yet separate nodes.

Russian musical nationalism → Impressionism

harmonytimbre and productionmelodystrength: mediumscholarly consensus1880–1905notationpedagogy

Mechanism

Impressionism takes kuchka color — Mussorgsky’s speech-melody and modal harmony, Rimsky’s orchestral paint — as a donor beside Wagner. Strength medium. romanticism impressionism is the Conservatoire and character-piece hop; javanese gamelan impressionism is the 1889 jolt. This edge is the Russian concert color Debussy studied.

Evidence

Debussy’s Mussorgsky scores and Pelléas; Rimsky as a Paris-facing orchestral model; Taruskin and Grove on the Russian listening.

Debate

Whether this is already Romanticism. The hop is a named national school’s color, not generic late tonality.

Impressionism → Bossa nova

harmonytimbre and productionstrength: mediumscholarly consensus1958–1964notationrecordingpedagogy

Mechanism

Jobim’s generation takes French color harmony — added-note sonorities, planed streams, pedal haze — into nylon-guitar chamber song. Strength medium. Jazz popular-song harmony is the other harmonic parent (jazz bossa nova); samba is the groove parent. Do not treat bossa as a style of Debussy.

Evidence

Jobim changes that sit beside Ravel/Debussy piano habit as well as cool-jazz voicing; McGowan and Grove on the French concert layer in the Rio song school.

Debate

How to split “jazz harmony” from “French harmony” on the same songs. Both edges are kept: jazz is the mid-century popular-song path already in the city; impressionism is the concert-score path Jobim names.

Impressionism → Jazz

harmonytimbre and productionstrength: mediumscholarly consensus1924–1965notationrecordingpedagogy

Mechanism

Jazz takes color harmony from the French concert dialect: ninths, added-note sonorities, parallel streams, and a pedal that does not have to resolve as a dominant. Strength medium. The job is piano and arranging, not Pelléas on a bandstand. Blues remains the other harmonic parent.

Evidence

Beiderbecke’s In a Mist; later Bill Evans and Gil Evans as the usual modern-jazz names for the same French chord vocabulary; Grove on jazz harmony’s non-functional layer.

Debate

How early the hop is (1920s novelty vs 1950s conservatory jazz). The edge covers both as one mechanism. Do not claim Debussy invented swing or that jazz becomes a style of impressionism.

Impressionism → Spanish musical nationalism

harmonytimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1907–1925pedagogypatronagenotation

Mechanism

Falla’s generation takes French late-tonal craft — added-note harmony, pedal, orchestra as painted atmosphere — and writes Spanish topics in that dialect. Strength medium. Flamenco supplies the recognizable color; Romantic nationalism supplies the job. Debussy and Ravel’s own “Spain” pieces are the other direction of the same Paris conversation, not this edge.

Evidence

Falla in Paris; Nights in the Gardens of Spain and the ballets; Hess on the French modernist layer already named in the nationalism file.

Debate

Whether Falla is “impressionist.” The edge is a harmony-and-orchestra hop, not a claim that the Spanish school becomes a style of Debussy.
