Also called shanghai popular song, era song

1920s–40s Shanghai popular song: Mandarin film and cabaret hits mixing jazz-band kit with Chinese melody (Zhou Xuan, Yao Lee). It hears Jazz for the cabaret dance-band kit and Traditional pop for the Tin Pan Alley film-song job. It already gives Cantopop that nightclub/film-song job moving to Hong Kong in Cantonese, and Mandopop the Mandarin star-ballad afterlife. Chinese opera leftover as a different lyric theatre. Chinese folk leftover as a refused catch-all.

instrumentationmeter and grooveharmonystrength: highscholarly consensus1920–1949recordingradiopatronage

Mechanism

Shidaiqu takes jazz’s cabaret dance-band kit — foxtrot and rumba pulse, reed-and-brass orchestra, Tin Pan Alley changes — under Mandarin film melody. Strength high. traditional pop shidaiqu is the song-factory hop; this edge is the band. Pointed at the jazz umbrella because the transfer is the long-term dance-band language, not one named jazz child.

Evidence

Zhou Xuan film sides with jazz-band backing; Shanghai Li Jinhui and Pathé cabaret orchestras; Grove on treaty-port jazz-pop.

Debate

Whether shidaiqu is already jazz. It remains a Mandarin film-song school; jazz is the donor band, not the genre rename.

Evidence

Pathé and film-theme hits built as extractable singles; Grove on Shanghai popular song as an interwar factory.

Debate

Whether the hop is only jazz. The dance band is jazz; the extractable film couplet is the traditional-pop job.

Mechanism

Cantopop keeps shidaiqu’s film-and-nightclub star song, in Cantonese instead of Mandarin. Strength medium. Mandopop is a later sibling, not this hop.

Evidence

Mid-1970s HK Cantonese turn against Shanghai/HK nightclub repertory (Grove).

Debate

Whether 1970s HK is still shidaiqu. The Mandarin cabaret public is shidaiqu’s; the Cantonese TV-chart job is Cantopop’s.

Mechanism

Mandopop keeps shidaiqu’s Mandarin star-ballad job — film or cabaret hook, extractable single — in Taiwan and Hong Kong studios. Strength high. shidaiqu cantopop is the Cantonese recoding; cantopop mandopop is the later HK factory in Mandarin. C-pop leftover as a refused bin.
