Genoese dock and workers’ polyphony: tenor, contralto, baritone, basses, and a chitarra voice that imitates a guitar, with vocable refrains (tra-la-le-ro). It is a tradition, not a leftover “Ligurian folk” bin. It hears Renaissance polyphony as the city’s older part-singing literacy and Romanticism as the nineteenth-century workers’ choir in which it is named. Canto a tenore and Paghjella leftover as siblings, not parents. Mountain two-voice Ligurian singing leftover as older prose, not a parent. Festival revival leftover as continuity.
