Late-1960s–70s rock that treats the album, studio, and concept as an artwork: literary or visual ambition, studio color, and “serious” listening, without requiring Progressive rock’s odd-meter virtuoso school (Grove, Starr). Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, the Velvet Underground’s art-world wing, Pink Floyd’s album-as-work, Roxy Music, Bowie’s conceptual records, and Queen’s studio theatricals (Bohemian Rhapsody) are the usual span. It is a style of rock, not a leftover bin for anything clever, and not an alias of Progressive rock or Progressive metal. The VU guitar past into college rock is art rock indie rock. Progressive rock is a neighboring technique school, not a child. Jazz leftover. Concert-music leftover as a prestige claim, not a sounding parent.
