Glam rock
Also called glitter rock
Kind of Rock
Early-1970s British (and related) rock that makes theatrical persona the point: costume, makeup, constructed gender, and 1950s rock-and-roll showmanship against late-1960s “authenticity” (Auslander). T. Rex, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Slade, and the theatrical wing of Queen are the usual core. It is a style of rock, not Glam metal (1980s Sunset Strip) and not a synonym for every sequined singer. The named boom is roughly 1971–75. Chart landings are glam rock pop. New wave leftover as Bowie testimony, not a child. Music-hall leftover.
