Art rock style · 1967–1977

Indie rock takes art rock’s Velvet Underground guitar, dry mix, and record-as-object as a usable past for college-radio songs.

Kind of Rock

1980s guitar underground that keeps post-punk’s independent scale and writes rock songs again: jangle, dry distortion, and a college-radio circuit (R.E.M., the Smiths, Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, later Pavement). It is a style of rock, not a synonym for any independent label and not a bin for indie pop, shoegaze, or Britpop. Shoegaze and Britpop are named children. It already gives Madchester the guitar-song grammar for the Hacienda crossover. Art rock supplies the VU guitar past. Chart landings are indie rock pop. Grunge is a neighboring 1990s split, not this file’s Seattle wing. Indie-pop leftover as a C86 wing. Alternative leftover as a market tag. Post-rock leftover. Lo-fi leftover.

Art rock → Indie rock

timbre and productionform and structureperformance practicestrength: mediumscholarly consensus1983–1988recording

Mechanism

Indie rock takes art rock’s Velvet Underground guitar, dry mix, and record-as-object as a usable past for college-radio songs. Strength medium. Post-punk is the closer 1980s institution parent; this hop is the VU art-world residue. Punk’s DIY hop stays punk indie rock.

Evidence

R.E.M. and allied 1980s underground bands citing VU (Azerrad, Grove).

Debate

Whether this collapses indie into art rock. The college-radio song job is indie’s; the 1960s art-world guitar is art rock’s.

Mediators

artist: The Velvet Underground; artist: R.E.M.

Folk rock → Indie rock

melodyharmonytimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1983–1988recording

Mechanism

The R.E.M./Smiths wing of indie rock reuses 1960s folk-rock craft: arpeggiated or twelve-string-descended jangle, singable strophe, and folk-diatonic changes. Strength medium: post-punk infrastructure is the heavier 1980s donor; this is the 1965 song/timbre share. Not a claim that indie is 1965 folk-rock.

Evidence

R.E.M.’s Byrds-like arpeggios; Smiths guitar as a folk-pop lead; Starr’s textbook source list.

Debate

Whether jangle is folk-rock or just 1980s chorus pedal. Both: the pedal is the tech; the song grammar is the 1960s transfer.

Mediators

artist: R.E.M.; artist: The Smiths

New wave → Indie rock

form and structureinstrumentationtimbre and productionstrength: mediumscholarly consensus1980–1988recordingradio

Mechanism

Indie rock keeps new wave’s short, hooky, radio-clear song after punk’s noise: Costello-type writing, trebly guitar, optional keys. Strength medium. Punk and post-punk remain the other parents (ethic and abrasion). This edge is why new wave is not only a 1983 market name.

Evidence

College radio and 1980s indie catalogs that sound closer to Costello/Cars/Heads than to hardcore; Azerrad on the 1980s independent circuit; Starr on new wave as a transferable template.

Debate

Talking Heads also sit on post-punk. The edge claims the pop-facing song job, not Remain in Light’s African-rhythm wing. Do not dump all MTV synth-pop onto indie.

Mediators

artist: Elvis Costello; artist: Talking Heads

Post-punk → Indie rock

performance practicetimbre and productionform and structurestrength: highwell documented1983–1988recordingoral

Mechanism

Indie rock inherits post-punk’s institutions and some of its guitar language — independent labels, club scale, dry or treated guitar — then writes clearer rock songs (R.E.M., Smiths). Strength high. Hardcore is a parallel U.S. underground; Azerrad covers both.

Evidence

I.R.S./Rough Trade-era records; Azerrad’s 1981–91 underground; Grove’s post-punk-to-indie line.

Debate

Whether college rock is just late post-punk. The corpus splits by job: post-punk experiments with parts; indie-rock recenters the guitar song.

Mediators

artist: R.E.M.; artist: The Smiths

Punk → Indie rock

performance practiceform and structurestrength: mediumwell documented1983–1988oralrecording

Mechanism

U.S. indie rock keeps punk’s DIY institutions and, on the Hüsker/Replacements wing, the short-song drive. Strength medium: post-punk is the closer 1980s parent for the UK/jangle wing; this edge is the punk ethic and the Minneapolis loud-song path (Azerrad).

Evidence

SST/Twin-Tone bands that still play punk-length rock; Azerrad’s underground map.

Debate

Whether this is punk or post-hardcore. The corpus points the loud 1980s song bands at indie-rock when the job is guitar songs, not hardcore velocity.

Mediators

artist: Hüsker Dü; artist: The Replacements

Rock → Indie rock

instrumentationform and structuremeter and groovestrength: highscholarly consensus1983–1991recordingradio

Mechanism

Indie rock is a rock style: quartet, backbeat, and song-led albums, played off the arena-AOR path. Taxonomically a child of Rock. Strength high.

Evidence

R.E.M. and 1980s college-radio guitar bands sold as rock (Starr, Grove, Azerrad’s circuit).

Debate

Whether “indie” is only a business model. This corpus keeps the named guitar-song style and leaves label politics as context.

Mediators

artist: R.E.M.

Indie rock → Britpop

form and structuremelodyperformance practicestrength: highscholarly consensus1993–1995recordingradio

Mechanism

Britpop keeps indie-rock’s guitar-song and independent-label grammar and aims it at a national UK chart public. Strength high. Other parents wait on the britpop node. Shoegaze is a sibling 1988–91 texture school, not this parent.

Evidence

Suede / Blur / Oasis 1993–95 against 1980s indie guitar songs (Starr, Grove).

Debate

Whether this is still indie. The college-radio underground job is indie-rock’s; the 1990s UK singles-and-tabloid job is britpop’s.

Mediators

artist: Oasis; artist: Blur

Indie rock → Grunge

performance practiceform and structuretimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1986–1992recordingoral

Mechanism

Grunge inherits the 1980s indie circuit — vans, independents, college radio, SST-type guitar crunch — and then adds Sabbath weight and punk wreckage (already filed). Strength medium: punk, hardcore, and metal are the heavier sound donors; this edge is the underground song institution Seattle was already in (Azerrad, Yarm).

Evidence

Sub Pop as an indie label; Mudhoney/Green River as song bands on that circuit; Hüsker as a named loud-indie model.

Debate

Whether grunge “is” indie rock. The corpus keeps grunge as its own genre: the metal/hardcore weight is not the R.E.M. job.

Mediators

artist: Hüsker Dü; artist: Mudhoney

Indie rock → Madchester

melodyform and structureperformance practicestrength: highscholarly consensus1988–1991recordingradio

Mechanism

Madchester keeps indie rock’s guitar-song and independent-label grammar and runs it through a Manchester club pulse. Strength high. acid house madchester is the dance-floor hop; post punk madchester is the Factory/Hacienda institution hop. Baggy leftover as a clothes-and-shuffle tag on the Madchester node.

Evidence

Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets as indie guitar bands on the Hacienda crossover (Grove, Starr).

Debate

Whether Madchester simply is indie rock with a 303. College-radio guitar song remains indie rock’s; the named Manchester club-and-guitar scene is the recoding.

Mediators

artist: The Stone Roses; artist: Inspiral Carpets

Indie rock → Pop

melodyform and structuretimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1991–1993recordingradio

Mechanism

Early-1990s pop takes indie-rock’s jangle guitar song and mumbled/crooned verse as a chart dialect. Strength medium. Alternative leftover as a market tag. Grunge is a neighboring loud split, not this hop.

Evidence

Losing My Religion and allied early-1990s R.E.M. singles (Starr, Grove).

Debate

Whether this is still indie. The college-radio underground is indie-rock’s; the MTV/singles job is pop’s.

Mediators

artist: R.E.M.

Indie rock → Shoegaze

timbre and productionperformance practiceform and structurestrength: highscholarly consensus1988–1991recordingoral

Mechanism

Shoegaze keeps indie-rock’s independent scale and guitar-song and buries the vocal in treated-guitar wash. Strength high. Dream-pop leftover as a neighboring texture name. Post-punk waits one step (indie). Other parents wait on the shoegaze node.

Evidence

My Bloody Valentine / Ride / Slowdive on the UK indie circuit, 1988–91 (Grove, Starr).

Debate

Whether this is already indie rock. The college-radio song job is indie’s; the pedal-wall and buried vocal are shoegaze’s.

Mediators

artist: My Bloody Valentine
