Breakbeat hardcore

style · 1990–1993

Also called hardcore breakbeat, oldschool hardcore

Early-1990s UK rave: sampled funk breaks at high speed, piano stabs, and a rave MC (Lennie De Ice, Prodigy, Acen). It hears Hip-hop for the chopped-break school, House for piano and club four, Acid house for the 303, and Techno for machine stabs. The hop into Jungle is those breaks plus bass weight; Big beat is the mid-tempo festival recoding. Happy hardcore and Belgian new beat remain leftover bins. Funk waits one step back (the breaks arrive as hip-hop samples). Rave stays a leftover circuit name.
