House
Also called house music
Includes Acid house
Mid-1980s Chicago club music: four-on-the-floor machines, a DJ-as-composer, and a gay Black and Latino dance floor (Knuckles, Jefferson, Fingers). It hears Disco for the pulse and the 12-inch, Italo disco for export synth-disco crates, Electro for 808/vocoder grain, and Gospel for choir-and-piano anthems. Acid house and UK garage are named children. Techno hears Chicago house as one parent. It already gives Kwaito the four-on-the-floor machine Johannesburg recodes as slowed township house-rap, and Gqom the same four Durban recodes as broken kicks. NY “garage” stays a club name on the disco/house hinge, not a second node. Deep house, hip-house, French house, and tropical house remain leftover bins. Hi-NRG and soul wait one step back through disco.
