Classical period
Also called Viennese Classical, Classical style
The late-eighteenth-century style centered on Haydn, Mozart, and early Beethoven: periodic phrase structure, dramatized tonality, and genres of symphony, string quartet, sonata, and opera buffa. “Classical” here is the period, not the broader Western art-music tradition. It hears Baroque for the long craft it slims, Galant for the mid-century phrase-and-accompaniment job it dramatizes, Ottoman mehter for the Turkish topic, and Ländler for the rustic triple dance. It already gives Romanticism, Waltz, and Academic ballet (Noverre’s ballet d’action). Empfindsamkeit leftover as a north-German sibling of galant. Opera buffa leftover as a theatrical vehicle on this node. Mannheim leftover as an orchestral dialect. Film leftover as a later concert-style job.
