Rock and roll
Also called rock 'n' roll
Includes Surf
Mid-1950s U.S. youth popular music that markets a blend of rhythm and blues, electrified blues, and country/pop to a racially mixed (and soon global) teenage audience. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, and others are not one style; they share backbeat, short forms, and guitar or piano as lead. Rockabilly and New Orleans piano dialects stay on this node. Boogie-woogie is the ostinato parent. Surf is the named early-1960s guitar-band child. The Twist stays a leftover dance-craze bin.
