Heard

Crust punk style · 1985–

Grindcore takes crust’s d-beat rush, squat-hall ethic, and dirt-guitar and compresses them into blast miniatures.

Influence
Death metal style · 1985–

Early grind bands hear the first death-metal records and take the guitar smear and roar, then shorten the form.

Influence
Hardcore punk style · 1979–

Grindcore keeps hardcore’s shortness, shout, and hall circuit and replaces the rock backbeat with a blast grid.

Grindcore

genre · 1986–

Also called grind

Includes Goregrind

A mid-1980s extreme style that runs hardcore miniatures at blast-beat speed with a death-metal or noise guitar: songs often under a minute, vocals as grind or scream, and a political or gore public code (Napalm Death, early Carcass, later Brutal Truth). It is its own genre, not a style of heavy metal and not a style of punk. Hardcore punk, Crust punk, and Death metal are donors. The blast then feeds back into 1990s death metal. Deathgrind leftover as a later meeting tag, not a third node.

Passed on

Death metal style · 1985–

Once grind exists, 1990s death metal borrows the blast as a normal section, not only a hardcore exception.

Influence
Goregrind style · 1988–

Goregrind keeps grindcore’s blast-and-miniature and changes the vocal and the public code from politics to gore.

Influence
Powerviolence style · 1989–

Powerviolence takes grindcore’s blast miniature and abrupt cut and keeps it in a U.

Influence

Crust punk → Grindcore

meter and groovetimbre and productionfunction and contextstrength: highwell documented1986–1988oralrecording

Mechanism

Grindcore takes crust’s d-beat rush, squat-hall ethic, and dirt-guitar and compresses them into blast miniatures. Strength high. U.S. hardcore remains the other speed donor. Discharge leftover as a mediator on the crust file, not a third grind parent.

Evidence

Birmingham Napalm Death next to Amebix/Hellbastard crust (Mudrian).

Debate

Whether grind is already crust. The anarcho d-beat song is crust’s; the named blast miniature is grindcore’s.

Mediators

artist: Napalm Death; community: Birmingham crust/hardcore circuit

Death metal → Grindcore

timbre and productionphrase and lickstrength: highwell documented1986–1989recordingoral

Mechanism

Early grind bands hear the first death-metal records and take the guitar smear and roar, then shorten the form. Strength high on the 1986–89 hinge. The later reverse edge (grindcore--death-metal) is the blast feeding back.

Evidence

Earache-era bands citing Possessed/Death and playing both bills (Mudrian). Carcass as a grind/death personnel overlap.

Debate

Dates overlap; some call it one “extreme” soup. The corpus keeps two nodes because miniature-blast and riff-death are different compositional objects.

Mediators

artist: Napalm Death

Hardcore punk → Grindcore

form and structuremeter and grooveperformance practicestrength: highwell documented1984–1988oralrecording

Mechanism

Grindcore keeps hardcore’s shortness, shout, and hall circuit and replaces the rock backbeat with a blast grid. Strength high. Death metal supplies the other half (guitar noise and growl).

Evidence

Napalm Death’s personnel and Scum as a Birmingham hardcore band going faster (Mudrian). Discharge and Siege as the usual cited homework.

Debate

Whether grind “is” just fast hardcore. The blast and the death-metal meeting are why it is a separate node.

Mediators

artist: Napalm Death; artist: Discharge

Grindcore → Death metal

meter and groovetimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1988–1994recordingoral

Mechanism

Once grind exists, 1990s death metal borrows the blast as a normal section, not only a hardcore exception. Strength medium: early death (Possessed, first Death) does not need this edge; later brutal and technical death often do.

Evidence

Post-1988 death records that blast in a grind way; shared Earache/Peaceville listening (Mudrian). The 1985 founding of death metal stays on the thrash incoming.

Debate

Whether blast “comes from” grind or from earlier hardcore. This edge is the named grindcore practice feeding back into death, not Discharge in 1982.

Mediators

artist: Napalm Death

Grindcore → Goregrind

meter and groovetimbre and productionfunction and contextstrength: highwell documented1988–1991recordingoral

Mechanism

Goregrind keeps grindcore’s blast-and-miniature and changes the vocal and the public code from politics to gore. Strength high. Death supplies the growl-and-lyric hop (death metal goregrind).

Evidence

Reek of Putrefaction against Scum; Mudrian on that Carcass fork.

Debate

Whether this is already death metal. The grid parent is grind; the growl-and-riff hop is later.

Mediators

artist: Carcass

Grindcore → Powerviolence

form and structuremeter and groovetimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1989–1994recordingoral

Mechanism

Powerviolence takes grindcore’s blast miniature and abrupt cut and keeps it in a U.S. hardcore hall, refusing metal soloing. Strength medium. Hardcore punk is the scene parent.

Evidence

Infest/Spazz next to Scum-era blast grammar (Mudrian).

Debate

Whether this is already grind. The death-metal guitar donor is grindcore’s; the named anti-metal hardcore miniature is powerviolence’s.

Mediators

artist: Infest; artist: Napalm Death
