Heard

Grindcore genre · 1986–

Once grind exists, 1990s death metal borrows the blast as a normal section, not only a hardcore exception.

Influence
Thrash metal style · 1983–

Death metal is thrash pushed past Slayer: the same muted-speed guitar and underground circuit, with growl instead of bark, lower tuning, and riffs that leave diatonic hooks.

Death metal

style · 1985–

Also called death

Kind of Heavy metal · Includes Melodic death metal

The mid-1980s underground metal style that takes thrash’s riff density and hardcore bark further: down-tuned chromatic cells, growled or roared vocals, and a kit that adds blast and double-kick as defaults (Kahn-Harris, Mudrian). Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel, and the later Florida and Swedish scenes are the usual core. It is a style of heavy metal, not a kind of punk. The riff-and-speed donor is Thrash metal. Do not hang this file on the 1970 umbrella as a direct wave.

Influence
Deathcore style · 2003–

Deathcore takes death metal’s growl, blast grid, and chromatic guitar smear and puts them on a metalcore song.

Influence
Goregrind style · 1988–

Goregrind keeps death metal’s growl, guitar smear, and pathology lyric and runs them on a grind miniature.

Influence
Gothic metal style · 1991–

Gothic metal begins as death (and death-doom) bands opening the mix: growl beside or under clean voice, slower harmonic rhythm, and a romantic lyric.

Influence
Grindcore genre · 1986–

Early grind bands hear the first death-metal records and take the guitar smear and roar, then shorten the form.

Influence
Melodic death metal style · 1993–

Melodeath is taxonomically a death-metal style and keeps the growl, the kit, and the underground circuit.

Influence
Symphonic metal style · 1996–

Therion’s path is death metal plus choir and orchestra: the band unit and underground career start in Swedish death; Theli makes the score the piece.

Grindcore → Death metal

meter and groovetimbre and productionstrength: mediumwell documented1988–1994recordingoral

Mechanism

Once grind exists, 1990s death metal borrows the blast as a normal section, not only a hardcore exception. Strength medium: early death (Possessed, first Death) does not need this edge; later brutal and technical death often do.

Evidence

Post-1988 death records that blast in a grind way; shared Earache/Peaceville listening (Mudrian). The 1985 founding of death metal stays on the thrash incoming.

Debate

Whether blast “comes from” grind or from earlier hardcore. This edge is the named grindcore practice feeding back into death, not Discharge in 1982.

Thrash metal → Death metal

phrase and lickmeter and groovetimbre and productionperformance practicestrength: highwell documented1984–1989recordingoral

Mechanism

Death metal is thrash pushed past Slayer: the same muted-speed guitar and underground circuit, with growl instead of bark, lower tuning, and riffs that leave diatonic hooks. Strength high — without thrash there is no extreme-metal school to recode. The 1970 umbrella is only the remote taxonomic parent.

Evidence

Possessed’s personnel and first album sit on the Bay Area thrash map; Schuldiner’s early Death tapes come from the same tape-trading world (Mudrian). Florida bands learn that dialect and tighten it.

Debate

Grindcore as a co-parent of the blast beat. Early death can exist without grind; later blasts are a meeting. This edge is the thrash riff-and-scene path.

Death metal → Black metal

performance practicetimbre and productionmeter and groovestrength: mediumwell documented1989–1994recordingoral

Mechanism

Second-wave black metal is in part a refusal of death metal made by people who already played it: same underground, opposite values (raw vs tight, shriek vs growl, atmosphere vs riff-sport). The transfer is the extremity and the scene, plus a negative template. Strength medium: definitional for Norway 1991–94, not for Venom 1982.

Evidence

Darkthrone’s first album as death metal; Mayhem and peers in the same tape world as death bands, then a documented turn (Kahn-Harris, Mudrian).

Debate

Whether a refusal counts as influence. In this corpus yes, when the target’s sound is shaped by leaving a specific neighbor. First-wave black metal does not need this edge; the umbrella keeps it because the style people now mean is the second wave.

Death metal → Deathcore

performance practicemeter and groovetimbre and productionstrength: highscholarly consensus2003–2008recordingoral

Mechanism

Deathcore takes death metal’s growl, blast grid, and chromatic guitar smear and puts them on a metalcore song. Strength high. It is not a Florida or Stockholm dialect. Metalcore supplies the breakdown form; this edge is the death job.

Evidence

Doom and early Whitechapel/Suicide Silence records that still break down like metalcore and roar like death; homework in 1990s death (Mudrian’s map, heard as records).

Debate

Whether this “leaves death.” The corpus treats deathcore as a meeting, not a style of Death metal. Slam and brutal death are neighbors inside death, not this node.

Death metal → Goregrind

timbre and productionphrase and lickperformance practicestrength: highwell documented1988–1991recordingoral

Mechanism

Goregrind keeps death metal’s growl, guitar smear, and pathology lyric and runs them on a grind miniature. Strength high. Grindcore supplies the blast grid (grindcore goregrind); this file is the death half.

Evidence

Reek of Putrefaction against mid-1980s death records; Mudrian on Carcass as a grind/death overlap.

Debate

Whether early Carcass “is” death metal. The grid parent is grind; the vocal-and-lyric hop is death’s.

Mediators

artist: Carcass

Death metal → Gothic metal

timbre and productionperformance practiceharmonystrength: highwell documented1990–1995recordingoral

Mechanism

Gothic metal begins as death (and death-doom) bands opening the mix: growl beside or under clean voice, slower harmonic rhythm, and a romantic lyric. Paradise Lost’s Gothic is the usual naming hinge. Strength high on the 1991–95 core. Later Dutch records keep the metal band and drop more of the death grammar.

Evidence

Peaceville personnel who start as death-doom and are marketed as gothic within a few years. The guitar-and-growl residue is still death metal even when the song has become a dark verse–chorus.

Debate

How much is doom rather than death. Both incoming edges are kept. Gothic rock as an aesthetic donor waits for a node.

Mediators

artist: Paradise Lost; institution: Peaceville

Death metal → Grindcore

timbre and productionphrase and lickstrength: highwell documented1986–1989recordingoral

Mechanism

Early grind bands hear the first death-metal records and take the guitar smear and roar, then shorten the form. Strength high on the 1986–89 hinge. The later reverse edge (grindcore--death-metal) is the blast feeding back.

Evidence

Earache-era bands citing Possessed/Death and playing both bills (Mudrian). Carcass as a grind/death personnel overlap.

Debate

Dates overlap; some call it one “extreme” soup. The corpus keeps two nodes because miniature-blast and riff-death are different compositional objects.

Mediators

artist: Napalm Death

Death metal → Melodic death metal

performance practicemeter and groovetimbre and productionstrength: highscholarly consensus1992–1996recordingoral

Mechanism

Melodeath is taxonomically a death-metal style and keeps the growl, the kit, and the underground circuit. What changes is the guitar job. Strength high on the child.

Evidence

Gothenburg bands who still call the music death metal and still growl; Slaughter of the Soul as a death record with sung guitar lines.

Debate

Whether this “leaves death.” The corpus treats it as a dialect, not a new genre.

Mediators

artist: At the Gates

Death metal → Symphonic metal

instrumentationtimbre and productionperformance practicestrength: mediumwell documented1994–1998recording

Mechanism

Therion’s path is death metal plus choir and orchestra: the band unit and underground career start in Swedish death; Theli makes the score the piece. Strength medium on the style as a whole (Nightwish does not come this way) and high on that wing. Growl-as-second-voice in later Epica-type bands is residue of this meeting, not of Helloween.

Evidence

Therion’s pre-Theli death records and the 1996 recoding. Personnel and label still sit on the extreme-metal map (Kahn-Harris).

Debate

Whether one band founds a genre. The corpus keeps the edge because the orchestral-metal idea is documented here before the Nightwish market boom, not because every later band covered Therion.
