Neoclassical metal
Also called neoclassical shred
Kind of Heavy metal
The mid-1980s metal style that treats Baroque sequence and Romantic virtuoso rhetoric as the main guitar job: harmonic minor and diminished runs, motoric sixteenths, and a Paganini/Bach public model on a metal band (Walser). Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force (1984) is the usual founding case; Rainbow-era Blackmore is the hard-rock hinge, not this node. It is a style of heavy metal, not a kind of Romanticism and not an alias of Power metal. Power metal can exist without this shred dialect (Helloween). Later power and some progressive metal receive it.
