Heard

Heavy metal genre · 1970–

Power metal keeps the umbrella’s high-vocal, twin-guitar, theatrical craft — Priest more than Sabbath — and writes it as bright speed anthems.

Influence
Neoclassical metal style · 1984–

Later power metal (Stratovarius and neighbors) borrows the Malmsteen run dialect — harmonic minor, diminished cycles, sweep sequences — as lead color on top of the Helloween song.

Influence
New Wave of British Heavy Metal style · 1979–1983

Power metal’s riff and song school is NWOBHM: gallops, harmony guitars, Maiden-type melody, speed without a hardcore bark.

Influence
Speed metal style · 1982–1987

Helloween’s path is the usual one: German speed metal that lengthens, brightens, and fantasy-codes the chorus until the press says power metal.

Kind of Heavy metal

The mid-1980s metal style that keeps NWOBHM gallops and twin leads and Priest-range vocals, then writes longer, brighter, often fantasy-lyric songs at high speed (Weinstein, Walser). Helloween is the usual German hinge (Walls of Jericho, Keeper of the Seven Keys); Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, and later Stratovarius and HammerFall extend it. It is a style of heavy metal, not a kind of thrash and not a synonym for all “happy metal.” Progressive-metal bands (Queensrÿche, Fates Warning) are a neighboring node if collected, not this file.

Symphonic metal style · 1996–

Nightwish and the “film score” wing keep power metal’s song: gallop, double-kick, singable chorus, fantasy or romantic lyric — then make orchestra or operatic voice structural.

Heavy metal → Power metal

melodyperformance practiceform and structurestrength: mediumwell documented1983–1988recordingradio

Mechanism

Power metal keeps the umbrella’s high-vocal, twin-guitar, theatrical craft — Priest more than Sabbath — and writes it as bright speed anthems. The gallop and song school are the NWOBHM edge; this edge is the older metal singer-and-stage language. Strength medium: audible and named, not the riff definition.

Evidence

Halford-range singers as the power-metal default; Walser’s account of 1980s metal virtuosity and fantasy fits this wing better than 1970 Birmingham.

Debate

Whether this is already covered by NWOBHM (Maiden also sings high). Maiden is on the other edge. Priest and the pre-1979 metal stage are the reason this file exists. No Romanticism parent: neoclassical shred is a later optional wing.

Mechanism

Later power metal (Stratovarius and neighbors) borrows the Malmsteen run dialect — harmonic minor, diminished cycles, sweep sequences — as lead color on top of the Helloween song. Strength medium: the 1985–88 Helloween core does not need this edge; the 1990s keyboard-bright wing often does.

Evidence

1990s European power leads that read as shred-school sequences rather than only Maiden tunes. Chronology: Rising Force (1984) before Keeper (1987–88), so this is a later absorption, not the founding of power metal.

Debate

Whether power metal “is” neoclassical. The corpus keeps Helloween’s song school on the NWOBHM/speed edges and this file for the optional shred layer.

New Wave of British Heavy Metal → Power metal

phrase and lickmeter and groovemelodyinstrumentationstrength: highwell documented1983–1988recordingoral

Mechanism

Power metal’s riff and song school is NWOBHM: gallops, harmony guitars, Maiden-type melody, speed without a hardcore bark. Helloween accelerates and brightens that dialect rather than recoding Slayer. Strength high.

Evidence

Early Helloween as a German band on a Maiden/Priest diet; Keeper choruses that still read as New Wave metal at higher polish. Thrash is a contemporary fork, not this path.

Debate

German speed metal (Accept, early Running Wild) as a nearer hinge. That can be a future node. This edge is the British riff-and-gallop gift actually audible on the power-metal template.

Speed metal → Power metal

meter and groovemelodyphrase and lickstrength: highwell documented1984–1988recordingoral

Mechanism

Helloween’s path is the usual one: German speed metal that lengthens, brightens, and fantasy-codes the chorus until the press says power metal. The NWOBHM gift is already inside speed; this edge is the German hinge. Strength high on the European template.

Evidence

Walls of Jericho as speed; Keeper of the Seven Keys as the named power-metal object. Same band, two style labels.

Debate

Whether power metal comes straight from Maiden. Both edges are kept: NWOBHM for the riff school, speed for the 1984–88 German recoding.

Power metal → Symphonic metal

melodymeter and grooveform and structurestrength: highwell documented1996–2002recordingradio

Mechanism

Nightwish and the “film score” wing keep power metal’s song: gallop, double-kick, singable chorus, fantasy or romantic lyric — then make orchestra or operatic voice structural. Strength high on that wing. Therion and Within Temptation need the other incoming edges; they are not proof that all symphonic metal is power metal.

Evidence

Oceanborn and later Nightwish as power-metal songs with soprano and keys/orchestra; Rhapsody’s self-described cinematic power metal. The riff dialect is still Helloween/Maiden, not Peaceville doom.

Debate

Whether Nightwish “is” power metal. The corpus treats the orchestral default as a new style that receives power metal, the way concert flamenco receives flamenco rather than remaining the café.
