A late-1990s metal style whose default texture is orchestra, choir, or a keyboard-orchestra that behaves like one — not a guest string line on a metal song (Therion’s Theli, 1996; Nightwish; later Within Temptation and Epica). It is a style of heavy metal, not an alias of Power metal and not a bin for every “symphonic black metal” record. Power metal supplies one song dialect (Nightwish, Rhapsody). Death metal supplies Therion’s path. Gothic metal supplies the Dutch/female-fronted path. Those are three incoming edges, not one parent.

Strength medium on the style as a whole (Nightwish does not come this way) and high on that wing. Growl-as-second-voice in later Epica-type bands is residue of this meeting, not of Helloween.

Therion’s pre-Theli death records and the 1996 recoding. Personnel and label still sit on the extreme-metal map (Kahn-Harris).

Debate

Whether one band founds a genre. The corpus keeps the edge because the orchestral-metal idea is documented here before the Nightwish market boom, not because every later band covered Therion.
