Heard

Hardcore punk style · 1979–

Metalcore keeps hardcore’s shout, breakdown, short-to-radio song, and hall/DIY circuit, then thickens the guitar with metal riffs.

Influence
Melodic death metal style · 1993–

2000s American metalcore takes Gothenburg’s sung guitar dialect — diatonic/harmonic-minor twin leads over a death-descended grid — and puts it on a hardcore verse–breakdown song.

Influence
Thrash metal style · 1983–

1990s metalcore takes thrash’s palm-muted riff, double-kick, and metal-guitar unit into a hardcore shout-and-breakdown form.

Metalcore

style · 1991–

Also called metallic hardcore, melodic metalcore

U.S. guitar music that meets hardcore’s shout, breakdown, and scene with a metal riff school. The 1990s metallic-hardcore layer (Integrity, Earth Crisis) is the first named crystallization; the 2000s radio wave (Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Unearth) takes sung dual-guitar melody from Melodic death metal. It is not a style of Death metal, not a dialect of Gothenburg, and not Nu metal (rap-verse on groove chug). Grindcore is a different hardcore–death meeting (blasts and miniatures). Easycore leftover as a later press tag.

Deathcore style · 2003–

Deathcore keeps metalcore’s breakdown, radio-to-hall song length, and scene, then changes the vocal and guitar job.

Influence
Pop genre · 1958–

2000s pop/rock radio takes metalcore’s sung chorus, dual-guitar hook, and breakdown song as a chart dialect.

Hardcore punk → Metalcore

performance practiceform and structuremeter and groovestrength: highscholarly consensus1991–2004oralrecording

Mechanism

Metalcore keeps hardcore’s shout, breakdown, short-to-radio song, and hall/DIY circuit, then thickens the guitar with metal riffs. Strength high. The 2000s Massachusetts wave still sits on that form; Gothenburg supplies the other half (sung dual-guitar melody), not this edge.

Evidence

Integrity and Earth Crisis as dated metallic-hardcore records; later Killswitch-era songs that still break down and shout the verse. Azerrad is the circuit, not a metalcore monograph.

Debate

Whether this is “just metal.” Without the hardcore form it would be another death or Gothenburg dialect. Grindcore is a different hardcore meeting (blasts and miniatures).

Mechanism

2000s American metalcore takes Gothenburg’s sung guitar dialect — diatonic/harmonic-minor twin leads over a death-descended grid — and puts it on a hardcore verse–breakdown song. Strength high on that wave. The 1990s metallic-hardcore layer can exist without this hop; Killswitch / Shadows Fall / Unearth cannot be explained without it.

Evidence

Slaughter of the Soul (1995) as the named homework; Massachusetts-wave records that still shout the verse and sing the guitar in At the Gates shapes.

Debate

Whether this “is” melodeath. The corpus treats metalcore as a meeting, not a Gothenburg dialect. Nu metal is a different 1990s radio metal and is not a parent.

Thrash metal → Metalcore

phrase and licktimbre and productionmeter and groovestrength: mediumwell documented1991–1996recordingoral

Mechanism

1990s metalcore takes thrash’s palm-muted riff, double-kick, and metal-guitar unit into a hardcore shout-and-breakdown form. Strength medium. Hardcore punk remains the scene parent; the 2000s sung-melody hop is Melodic death metal.

Evidence

Integrity and Earth Crisis against Slayer/Exodus riff homework (Kahn-Harris, Mudrian).

Debate

Whether this is already hardcore. The hall-and-breakdown job is hardcore’s; the thrash riff diet is this hop.

Metalcore → Deathcore

form and structuremeter and grooveperformance practicestrength: highscholarly consensus2003–2008oralrecording

Mechanism

Deathcore keeps metalcore’s breakdown, radio-to-hall song length, and scene, then changes the vocal and guitar job. Strength high. Without this form it would be another death-metal dialect. Death metal supplies the other half (growl, blast, chromatic smear).

Evidence

Suicide Silence and Whitechapel as dated metalcore-circuit bands writing slam-and-blast records; early Bring Me the Horizon as the same form before that project leaves the style.

Debate

Whether this “is” metalcore. The corpus splits them: the clean-chorus Massachusetts wave stays on Metalcore; deathcore is the death-vocal child. Grindcore is a different, earlier hardcore–death meeting.

Metalcore → Pop

Mechanism

2000s pop/rock radio takes metalcore’s sung chorus, dual-guitar hook, and breakdown song as a chart dialect. Strength medium. Easycore leftover as a later press tag. The 1990s metallic-hardcore layer does not make this hop.

Evidence

Killswitch Engage and Bullet for My Valentine singles (Starr, Grove).

Debate

Whether this is already pop. The hardcore-hall job is metalcore’s; the singles factory is pop’s.
